Leigh Centurions will be without key strike player Dennis Moran for eight to 10 weeks.
Moran bow as Centurions make Rovers return by Trevor Hunt
The former Wigan player suffered a leg injury in the first half of the clash with Celtic Crusaders and a scan has revealed a more serious injury than was first thought.
" Dennis has dama
ged knee ligaments." Explained Coach Neil Kelly, " he went down awkwardly in the tackle but gamely carried on. Unfortunately when we watched the video you could se he was playing on one leg. Now he faces a lay off of some eight or ten weeks, and seeing that he had said it was to be his last season, it could be a dreadfully disappointing end to a very good career. Hopefully he may be back sooner, but it doesn't look good."
The Centurions head to Featherstone Rovers were Kelly is looking for his side to continue their improvement and complete a job that they only half finished when the two sides met at Hilton Park in Kelly's first game in charge six weeks ago.
" We did well for all but the last ten minutes and then let Rovers back in the game." He reflected. " We won 28-29 but I would like to see us take what we have been doing well and really take it through the full eighty minutes. Featherstone are a different proposition on their own ground, of course and it will be tough, but it is a job we can do."
Leigh will have Anthony Stewart back and are hoping that Steve Maden will play too.
" Steve has said he wants to play, but his wife is still waiting to give birth." Added Neil, " Anthony (Stewart) is a father and he will be available.!
It will be a tough task to win at the Chris Moyles Stadium but Leigh's
45- 22 defeat by Celtic Crusaders ten days ago was the first under Kelly, and he is determined that his side put that behind them and get on with the business of picking up the wins they need to push them higher into the play-off placings.
But for the fans it is an opportunity for the Centurions to erase the memory one of the bigger disappointments of the season. Leigh were at the Chris Moyles Stadium back in March , when they crashed 36-10 to the Rovers in the Northern Rail Cup. Regardless of the rights and wrongs of their finishing top of their qualification group, and then having to play away to a side that had finished second in theirs, that showing was one of the most lamentable of Leigh's generally disappointing season.
Leigh did manage that 28-20 victory at Hilton Park, but a win in Featherstone would certainly prove a boost not only to the clubs play-off chances, but to the fans as well.
In the meantime Kelly has thrown down the gauntlet to his forwards. " I want someone to step up and make a shirt theirs! " he declared, " They are generally doing well, but we need someone who makes sure that his form means he will be a first choice in the position, and that is not happening just yet. " But it is up to them."
The Centurions' Reserves were in action over the weekend at Workington, where they earned a 38-10 victory and this week Workington visit Hilton Park in the return game on Saturday 21st June. Kick of is 2:30pm.
