TRAMPOLINIST Danny Greaves officially launched Leigh and Wigan's 2012 dream by unfurling the London Olympic flag.
The 16-year-old is the current British under-17s Champion and is already being earmarked as a potential medal winner in four years' time.
The Bedford High student officially marked the handover from Beijing to London with a special celebration at Le
igh Sports Village – a potential training camp, along with Robin Park Arena, for teams competing in the Olympics.
More than 1,000 people also enjoyed leisure activities at Active Life centres across the borough as Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust opened its doors for free in honour of the occasion.
Elected members and Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust officials attended the ceremony.
Trevor Barton, Wigan borough's 2012 voluntary sector champion said: "Daniel is a true ambassador of sport in the borough.
"He's hard working, professional and courteous – we wish him all the best in his training.
"Hopefully, this year's Olympics has inspired more young people to take up sports so that we can surpass this year's fantastic medal tally in London 2012.
"Equally we also hope it will encourage more people to take up sports and live healthier lives."
During the next four years a range of events will be held including a cultural festival, sporting festival, volunteering and specific projects aimed at inspiring young people as part of Wigan and Leigh's Cultural Olympiad programme.
The Olympic handover flag will fly above Wigan town hall until the closing ceremony of the Paralympics in Beijing.
