Silver lining for hospice celebrations

The silver anniversary of Wigan and Leigh's Hospice is being celebrated next weekend.
Friday, September 12, is the 25th anniversary of the first patient being admitted into the borough's premises in Poolstock, Wigan.
And over the weekend of September 12, 13 and 14, a Flower Festival is being held at the current hospice in Kildare Street, Hindley along with a service of thanksgiving at St Benedict's Church.
The original hospice, a former vicarage in Poolstock, Wigan, was the culmination of a dream that began in 1977.
Years of effort, dedication and support by professionals and volunteers worked tirelessly to raise the much needed funds and formed 'The Friends of the Hospice' still supporting the Hospice today.
In 1997 the hospice moved to the bright, modern building in Hindley which next weekend will be transformed into 'The Universe' – the theme of the Flower Festival by Wigan Floral Art Club.
It promises to be a spectacular and magnificent display and admission is free.
Hospice Chief Executive Stuart Liptrot said: "We want to thank the far-sighted people who laid the foundations for what we are fortunate to have today, and the generosity of the public whose ongoing support is vital to our upkeep.''
The Thanksgiving Service will be taken by clergy from different denominations and everyone is welcome.
The floral extravaganza will be open on Friday (September 12) from 2pm-8pm and Saturday and Sunday from 12pm-6pm.
